Position Overview
Patrol officers conduct a wide range of duties focused on police-community relations, crime prevention, and public safety. Patrol officers actively patrol their assigned areas and respond to various emergency and non-emergency situations, including criminal investigations, accidents, disturbances, and traffic violations, assessing each scene to determine the appropriate course of action. Duties include conducting arrests, searching suspects, preparing reports, testifying in court, and fostering police-community partnerships.
This role requires strong communication skills, the ability to assess situations and make decisions quickly, and a commitment to upholding law and order. Recruit officers will receive comprehensive training at the IMPD Training Academy, and therefore, knowledge of criminal law, law enforcement procedures, and department policies is not required to apply for this position.

This position offers a starting salary of $74,459.00 annually.
Patrols assigned area in vehicle and on foot; maintains high patrol visibility to assist in crime prevention; actively performs routine beat patrol, concentrating on high incident areas, to detect possible criminal activities or needs for service; regularly checks businesses and residential areas; monitors radio broadcasts by Communications and other officers to ensure awareness of activities in area and to provide assistance, if needed; identifies, reports, and responds to suspicious activities or needs for service
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Proactively patrol assigned areas and engage with community members to deter crime and foster police community partnerships.
- Evaluate situations, de-escalate conflicts, and implement appropriate action.
- Conduct criminal investigations, secure crime scenes, interview victims and witnesses, apprehend suspects, and gather evidence.
- Prepare various reports, including incident reports, accident reports, arrest slips, and other
documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with department policies. - Enforce traffic laws, conduct vehicle stops, issue citations, and make arrests related to traffic violations when appropriate.
- Maintain uniforms and equipment per department standards and policies.
Education:
Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate (Home schooled students must take a general equivalency exam and present a general educational development certificate (GED).
Other Requirements:
- Must be a citizen of the United States
- Must be 21 years old and not have reached their 40th birthday by date of appointment
- Have not been arrested or charged with a felony that has not been expunged by a court, even if charges were later dropped or dismissed
- Must possess a valid driver’s license from their state of residence
- Must have adequate means of transportation into the jurisdiction served by the member’s department; and maintain telephone service to communicate with the department
- Cannot have been dishonorably discharged from the military
- Must pass a mandatory drug screening test
