Diversity at IMPD
Honoring and Celebrating Diversity at IMPD
At the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), we take a moment to honor and celebrate the rich diversity within our department and the vibrant community we serve. Our officers come from a wide variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations, each bringing unique stories and perspectives that contribute to the overall spirit of our great city.
We believe our strength is rooted in this diversity. It not only reflects the communities we serve, but also enhances our ability to connect, protect and lead with fairness and empathy. From heritage and cultural recognition to intentional efforts toward inclusion, we are proud of the progress we continue to make.
Black History Month Badge
As part of our ongoing commitment to honoring diversity, IMPD is proud to offer the Black History Month Memorial Badge to officers, a symbol designed by Black officers to commemorate the pioneers who paved the way in law enforcement and those who continue to serve with distinction today.
This meaningful badge may be worn by officers throughout the month of February and again on Juneteenth, as a tribute to the strength, leadership, and resilience of African American officers past and present.

LGBTQ+ Officers & Allies at IMPD
At the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), we recognize and value the important role LGBTQ+ officers and civilian staff play in shaping a more inclusive and understanding department.
Their experiences and perspectives not only enrich our culture but also strengthen the bonds between our agency and the diverse communities we serve.
IMPD is committed to fostering an environment where all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, feel respected, supported, and empowered to thrive in their roles. We continue to work toward inclusive policies, training, and opportunities for dialogue that reflect our belief in dignity, equity, and human rights for all. Through partnerships with local LGBTQ+ organizations, participation in Indy Pride events, and ongoing engagement with the community, IMPD is proud to stand as an ally and advocate for equality.
Women & IMPD: Our Diversified Workforce
At IMPD, we’re committed to building a department that truly reflects the diversity of the community we serve. That’s why we’ve joined the 30×30 Initiative—a national effort to advance women in policing. Our goal is to increase the number of women in our recruit classes to 30% by 2030 and to ensure our policies and culture actively support their success at every stage of their careers. We believe in the power of women in law enforcement, knowing their presence strengthens our department, builds trust, and enhances fairness and inclusivity in how we serve our city.
