Summary:

Candidates will have a current and up-to-date Law Enforcement Training Academy Certification issued from the state where the candidate currently utilizes law enforcement powers. (Please see qualifications below for additional description and criteria). Lateral candidates are required to be in good standing with their current agency.

 

Knowledge & Ability To:

Candidates must understand law enforcement procedures, criminal laws, and departmental policies to enforce regulations effectively. Proficiency in using police equipment, including firearms and communication devices, is essential. Officers should also be skilled in community policing strategies to foster trust and cooperation with the public. Additionally, knowledge of first aid and emergency response procedures ensures they can handle critical situations effectively. Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and communication skills are necessary for maintaining public safety and responding to incidents efficiently

lateral officer (out-of-state)

This position starts at an annual salary of $85,331.00

Lateral Police Officer candidates are experienced full-time police officers currently employed by other municipal, county, or state agencies, as a law enforcement officer assigned to patrol responsibilities. Candidates will have a current and up-to-date Law Enforcement Training Academy Certification issued from the State where the candidate currently utilizes Law Enforcement powers. (Please see Qualifications below for additional description and criteria). Lateral Candidates are required to be in good standing with their current agency.

  1. Patrols assigned area in vehicle and on foot; maintains high patrol visibility to assist in crime prevention; actively performs routine beat patrol, concentrating on high incident areas, to detect possible criminal activities or  needs for service;
  2. Monitors radio broadcasts by Communications and other officers to ensure awareness of activities in area and to provide assistance, if needed; identifies, reports, and responds to suspicious activities or other needs for service
  3. Investigates conditions hazardous to life or property; conducts initial investigations of crime and crime scenes; may assist detectives in criminal investigation work.
  4. Conducts search and seizure activities as appropriate.
  5. Collects and preserves crime scene and evidence
  6. Arrests and/or detains suspected violators of the law.
  7. Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved
  8. Testifies and presents evidence in judicial settings. (Misdemeanor, Felony, and Violations.)
  9. Records facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities.
  10. Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries

Education:

  • High School Diploma or HSE required

Experience:

  • Must have Law Enforcement Training Academy Certification in the State the candidate is currently employed
  • Must document at least one year of paid, full time law enforcement service after completing certification from another state.
  • Employed full-time as a Sworn Law Enforcement Officer with a County, State, or Municipal Law Enforcement Agency with their primary role as a Patrol Officer assigned to similar job responsibilities as listed above.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be a resident citizen of the United States
  • Must be 21 years old and not have reached their 40th birthday by date of appointment
  • Cannot have felony conviction;
  • Cannot have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence
  • Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license at the time of appointment
  • Cannot have been dishonorably charged from the military
  • Must be a resident of the state of Indiana at the time of appointment
